The First Hymn
Welcome!

The Church often uses the word ‘mystery’ to describe some of the things it believes. This is not because it thinks that faith is baffling, or that it is a puzzle to be solved! In church language, a mystery is something that we can’t work out unless it is revealed to us. Hence, the mystery of love, and the mystery of God. We celebrate the God who has made himself known to us in Jesus Christ.

Psalm 29
Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; worship the Lord in holy splendour. The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over mighty waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl, and strips the forest bare; and in his temple all say, "Glory!" The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever. May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Acclamation

Glory to the holy
and undivided Trinity,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
Three persons
and yet one God.
Perfectly one
from before time began;
One in being
and one in glory;
Dwelling in love,
three persons, one God.

The Collect Prayer

Holy God, faithful and unchanging:
enlarge our minds
with the knowledge of your truth,
and draw us more deeply
into the mystery of your love,
that we may truly worship you,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.
Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)

Bible Reading

John 16: 5-15 (The work of the Holy Spirit.)

…but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, “Where are you going?” Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

‘I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.’

Thought for the Day

Have you got a ‘to do’ list lying around? Maybe each day we look at such a list to decide what jobs to tackle. Every item on the list is something that needs addressing, but we have to prioritise things. We also have to check our levels of energy and motivation. Forty years ago the Falkland Islands were invaded. We had a clear responsibility to defend them, but they are small and 8000 miles away. As a nation we had to decide whether defending them, however legally right and morally important, was worth the effort.  We prioritized the task. We travelled to the other side of the world, and we secured the Islands at the cost of many lives, including 255 British soldiers’ lives.

The process of decision making that led to such action repeats itself many times. Tax Justice Sunday reminds us that another item on our ‘to do’ list is to address the huge inequalities in our world where complex financial mechanisms help the richest companies and individuals to avoid paying taxes whilst poverty destroys countless lives. Just like 40 years ago, we have to decide if tackling this injustice is a priority, and whether we have the energy and motivation to get up and do something about it.

Help and support for you and me are on God’s ‘to do’ list. And despite the vastness of the universe, and the multitude of serious issues facing our world, our hope and prayer is that God will remember us. Every time that thought crosses our minds, we should be inspired to act accordingly and respond to the needs of those who, for whatever reason, may have slipped down our priority list. The common theme running through all the issues we are focused on today is this: Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:40)

Let us Pray

God of heaven and earth, before the foundation of the universe and the beginning of time you are the triune God: the Author of creation, the eternal Word of salvation, and the life-giving Spirit of wisdom. Guide us to all truth by your Spirit, that we may proclaim all that Christ revealed and rejoice in the glory he shared with us. Glory and praise to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Almighty God, maker of earth and sky and sea, we give thanks for the freedom in which we enjoy the beauty of the created world; And we remember with gratitude and humility those of our number who paid that freedom’s price. May not only our memories, but also our commitment further the cause of justice, freedom and peace in our country and in the world. In the name of the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ… Amen

God of the universe, we thank you for your many good gifts - for the beauty of Creation and its rich and varied fruits, for clean water and fresh air, for food and shelter, animals and plants. Forgive us for the times we have taken the earth's resources for granted and wasted what you have given us. Transform our hearts and minds so that we would learn to care and share, to touch the earth with gentleness and with love, respecting all living things. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

God the Holy Trinity make you strong in faith and love, defend you on every side, and guide you in truth and peace; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.

Amen.
