The First Hymn
Welcome!

The main section of a church where the congregation sit is usually called the Nave. As the word suggests, this is a nautical reference because the Nave is supposed to resemble a boat. We are all aboard the ark, safe and well. Faith, however, does not protect us from the storms of life. The key is to be safe within ourselves despite the storm. That’s faith and hope working together.

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.

Acclamation

O praise ye the Lord!
Thanksgiving and song
To Him be outpoured
All ages along
For love in creation
For heaven restored
For grace of salvation
O praise ye the Lord!

The Collect Prayer

Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of all: govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.
Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)

Bible Reading

Luke 21: 5-19 (Sheltering from the storm.)

Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, ‘As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.’ ‘Teacher,’ they asked, ‘when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?’ He replied: ‘Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, “I am he,” and, “The time is near.” Do not follow them. When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.’ Then he said to them: ‘Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. ‘But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. And so you will bear testimony to me. But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. Everyone will hate you because of me. But not a hair of your head will perish. Stand firm, and you will win life.

Thought for the Day

Imagine a Ukrainian child in a bomb shelter, holding their head in their cupped hands. It’s an image of anxiety, confusion and despair. Maybe they are holding their head in their hands for comfort. Such a child would want to find reassurance in the arms of their mum and dad. In those moments when we just cannot make sense of the troubles that beset us, we seek refuge in a place that will give us security and comfort.

Often, that special place is a person. In our gospel reading today Jesus warns his disciples that they are about to face a disturbing and very challenging time. He inspires them to be strong and of good courage because he will not be very far away. ‘Stand firm’, he says, ‘and you will win life.’ Maybe our response would be that this is easier said than done. Who would not shudder in an earthquake?

Who would not experience bewilderment when all the familiar landmarks of our lives are taken away? Who would not feel utterly broken when betrayed by so-called friends? And yet, time and time again people witness to a strength that comes from deep within – a strength that surprises us by its presence – a faith that refuses to let us lose hold of the truly precious things of life that no-one and nothing can take away from us. As they say, “It’s a big ask” but a wise person cultivates their faith at every opportunity so that when the time of trial comes…they are ready.

Let us Pray

God, our God, you hear our cry and listen to our prayer. Grant that we may know that our redeemer lives and, trusting in you, be confident that we will not be lost or forgotten. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

Abba, Father, you are the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God. You are our Creator and our Counsellor, guiding us daily to make wise decisions. You are our Comforter in sorrow, pain, or distress. We praise you for drawing near to us when we draw near to you. How great are you, and your faithfulness endures forever. Amen. Heavenly Father, we pray for those who might be suffering in body, mind or spirit. May we all find in you a shelter from the storm, a calming presence in anxious moments, a reassuring voice in times of confusion, and a source of strength in times of trial. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

God grant to the living grace, to the departed rest, to the Church, the Queen, the Commonwealth and all people, unity, peace and concord, and to us and all God’s servants, life everlasting. And the blessing of God Almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirit be with you all and remain with you always.

Amen
