The First Hymn
Welcome!

What is the best way to pray? In our church Services we do a lot of praying – sometimes using a carefully worded prayer, and sometimes allowing our inner private thoughts to find their own expression. In whatever way we might pray, it’s important first to focus on who we are addressing. Both in worship and prayer we pause first to acknowledge the reality of God’s presence.

Psalm 146

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul! I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long. Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, in whom there is no help. When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish. Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever; who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. The Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord!

Acclamation

The Lord is my beloved,
his love is more delightful than wine!
His presence is more pleasing than perfume
whose fragrance fills the air!
Let us hasten into his presence
for our hearts long for him!
Let us rejoice and delight in him;
let us praise his love for ever!

The Collect Prayer

Almighty God,
whose only Son has opened for us
a new and living way into your presence:
give us pure hearts and steadfast wills
to worship you in spirit and in truth;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.
Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)

Bible Reading

Luke 16:1-13 (The price and prize of serving God.)

Jesus told his disciples: ‘There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions. So he called him in and asked him, “What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.” ‘The manager said to himself, “What shall I do now?

My master is taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to beg – I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.” ‘So he called in each one of his master’s debtors. He asked the first, “How much do you owe my master?” ‘“Three thousand litres of olive oil,” he replied. ‘The manager told him, “Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifteen hundred.” ‘Then he asked the second, “And how much do you owe?” ‘“Thirty tons of wheat,” he replied. ‘He told him, “Take your bill and make it twenty-four.” ‘The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly.

For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light. I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. ‘Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own? ‘No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

Thought for the Day

As we lament the death of our Queen, the nation mourns. And as we mourn, the memory of many past losses become vivid again to compound our sorrow. Along with sorrow, grief brings disruption, confusion and anxiety. We pray to God for strength, peace and the return of stability in our lives and in the nation. For now, we find many ways to show our respect for the one we have lost. We light candles, lower flags, visit significant places, lay flowers and sign books of Condolence. In time, however, true respect will lead us to more positive action. As mentioned at a recent school assembly, one of the best ways of showing someone respect is to imitate their virtues.

Our Gospel reading for today reminds us that a call to a life of duty and service demands choices and decisions. There are moments in our lives where a decision sets our course for the future. In that decision we choose a way of life, and consequently we reject alternative ways. Options close. A binding investment is made. At her Coronation, the late Queen Elizabeth II, having chosen a life of service, was anointed to seal that choice in the presence of God. A holy and private moment with enormous public consequences. We are not royalty, but we can certainly choose a royal path for our lives, and then with a brave heart to seal that choice in the presence of God.

Let us Pray

Merciful Father and Lord of all life, we praise you that we are made in your image and reflect your truth and light. We thank you for the life of our late Sovereign Lady QUEEN ELIZABETH, for the love she received from you and showed among us. Above all, we rejoice at your gracious promise to all your servants, living and departed, that we shall rise again at the coming of Christ. And we ask that in due time we may share with your servant Elizabeth that clearer vision promised to us in the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, Father of all mercies and giver of all comfort: deal graciously, we pray, with all who mourn, the members of the Royal Family, this Nation and all the Nations of the Commonwealth, that casting all our care on you, we may know the consolation of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.
