The First Hymn
Welcome!

In our worship we focus on Jesus. We know him by many names and titles. Some of our great hymns refer to Jesus on majestic terms, calling him King of Kings and Lord of Lords. At the other end of the spectrum we have intimate references to Jesus as our Friend and Shepherd. At some point on the spectrum we find Jesus being called Master, and this is what we will be thinking of in this Service. Jesus, our Master, and us as his disciples.

Psalm 119: 129-144

Your statutes are wonderful; therefore I obey them. The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. I open my mouth and pant, longing for your commands. Turn to me and have mercy on me, as you always do to those who love your name. Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me. Redeem me from human oppression, that I may obey your precepts. Make your face shine on your servant and teach me your decrees. Streams of tears flow from my eyes, for your law is not obeyed.
You are righteous, Lord, and your laws are right. The statutes you have laid down are righteous; they are fully trustworthy. My zeal wears me out, for my enemies ignore your words. Your promises have been thoroughly tested, and your servant loves them. Though I am lowly and despised, I do not forget your precepts. Your righteousness is everlasting and your law is true. Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands give me delight. Your statutes are always righteous; give me understanding that I may live.

Acclamation

In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high has broken upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

The Collect Prayer

O God, you know us to be set
in the midst of so many and great dangers,
that by reason of the frailty of our nature
we cannot always stand upright:
grant to us such strength and protection
as may support us in all dangers
and carry us through all temptations;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Sharing the Peace

We are the Family of God;
In the one Spirit we were all baptised
into one body.

Let us then pursue all that makes for peace
and builds up our common life.

(At this point please think of others
and in your heart send them
the message: Peace be with you.)

Bible Reading

Luke 5: 1-11 (Jesus chooses his first disciples.)

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding round him and listening to the word of God. He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.’ Simon answered, ‘Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.’ When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signalled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, ‘Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!’ For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, ‘Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.’ So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

Thought for the Day

I was looking for a picture to illustrate our Bible Reading where Jesus calls Simon, James and John to follow him. I was spoilt for choice. One picture was of a man playing the role of Jesus, wearing simple clothes. The other picture was of an icon of Jesus, dressed in fine garments with a halo round his head.

Supposing someone were to stand before us today and call us to abandon our plans, make sacrifices, and dedicate ourselves to their plans. Would we be more likely to agree if they were dressed smartly, or if they were scruffy? Would we prefer it if they drove a brand new car, or an old heap? What about their language? Would we find eloquence persuasive? These might be silly thoughts, but in this day and age a salesperson would be trained to come across as well-educated and successful in order to win us over. So, why was Jesus so successful in getting people to follow him? Maybe there is an intriguing attraction to someone who has no regard for the outward trappings of success and wealth. Maybe we are drawn to the person whose authority radiates out from an inner peace and utter goodness. Maybe there is nothing more compelling than compassion. And then there is the attraction of believing in the person who believes in us. Well, we need to be careful because Jesus continues to look for disciples!

Let us Pray

Yours, Lord is the Glory, in everything I see, a country scene, mountain stream, sunrise, sunset, rain and snow. Yours, Lord is the Glory, wherever I might go. Yours, Lord is the Glory, in everything I hear, a roaring sea, bumblebee, laughter, loving, a tender poem. Yours, Lord is the Glory, wherever I might go. Yours, Lord is the Glory, in everything I feel, a special place, warm embrace, accepted, helped to become whole. Amen.

Loving God, you have called forth disciples and prophets to live and speak your word. Give us ears to hear, lives to respond, and voices to proclaim the good news of salvation, which we know in our Saviour Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

(Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.)
The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.

Amen.
