A very Happy New Year to you all with a rush of hope and optimism
The Rectors Blog January 2022

From the Rectory: Dear Friends,
A very Happy New Year to you all. That is certainly my wish, and as they say, ‘hope springs eternal’. Despite all the difficulties we face, the New Year brings a rush of hope and optimism. Even as I write this, the spring flowers are pushing up their green leaves. Also I am so impressed with a number of individuals who are already planning good things for Henley in the coming year. Some people just can’t help themselves – they keep on coming up with good ideas! God bless them because we certainly need them! As we head into a New Year with the frustration that the pandemic is still with us, I am reminded of the good spirit that helped people through the Second World War. That period of hardship went on for six years! It certainly inspires me to ‘Keep calm and carry on’.
We often refer to difficult days as dark times. In dark times we need light. The cycle of nature will help with the inevitable lengthening of daylight hours. Hopefully we will gradually receive the light of good news – of progress and breakthroughs. But while we wait for such things it is so important that we should be like a light to one another. Jesus famously referred to himself as the Light of the World, but he equally called each one of us to shine. We receive this inspiring challenge at our baptism, and often a candle is given to us to represent that call. What a great thing it is to know that we are all trying to find ways of brightening other people’s lives. So, whether you find yourself being a guiding light, a comforting gentle light or a dazzling ‘bright ideas’ light, thank you! So, once more, Happy New Year, and may Christ indeed be the light of your world.
