God Communicates in Mysterious Ways
The Rector's Blog - July 2020

Dear Friends,
There is an old story of Moses coming across a tree that seemed to be on fire and he heard the voice of God coming out of the flames. I can’t match that story, but let me tell you about my recent BBQ.
During a recent heatwave we decided to grill some home-made pork kebabs on the BBQ. I made a glaze with olive oil, mustard and honey and as the kebabs sizzled I drizzled on the glaze. I was rather pleased with myself. Anyone watching would have thought “He knows what he’s doing” – except I didn’t. The kebabs were OK but the flames had burned most of the glaze off the meat. I now realise that I would have been much better off if I had marinated the meat to let the flavours soak in. That’s the end of my story…but then came the voice of God!
It occurred to me that the olive oil, mustard and honey were like the good things we experience in life – the random acts of kindness and generosity that make things special. Some people, like myself, have moments of inspiration when we have a surge of energy and we come up with good ideas to help others. But then the busy demands of life force us to go back to ‘normal’. Our good deeds are like the spicy drizzle that excites for a while. On the other hand amongst us there are true saints who are always caring for others. Day in and day out you can depend on them to be thoroughly good. In my silly illustration it is as though they are marinated in goodness. It’s in their DNA.
I thank God for all who have waves of enthusiasm and inspiration to do something wonderful for others, even if it is for a season. And I truly thank God for those who year in and year out can always be depended on for help and support.
Oh yes, I mentioned the voice of God. Well, he said to me, “John, when it comes to the good qualities in your life, how do you see them? Drizzle or Marinade?” God communicates in mysterious ways, but he has certainly got me thinking.
