A Month of Remembrance
Remembrance While Looking Forward
Henley in Arden Parish Church – celebrating life in the heart of Henley. November 2019 From the Rectory - Dear Friends, Recently I was invited by our Church of England Primary School to be part of a careers morning. Representing a variety of careers we adults sat around the Hall while groups of children took their turn to interview us. I took the opportunity to ask the children what careers attracted them. As you can expect many of them wanted to follow in their parents’ footsteps and quite a few wanted to work with animals. I was pleased that a handful were interested in doing my job, but I was more intrigued by those who wanted to be ‘You-Tubers’ when they grow up. These children saw a lucrative future in sitting in front of a screen and joining in with online competitions. I guess I was slightly worried in an old fashioned way, but what do I know! The world is changing at a fast pace. On the one hand we are being encouraged to travel less to reduce our carbon footprint whilst on the other hand trips to outer space are becoming possible for those who can afford it. We are eating more than ever before whilst at the same time we are worried about future food supplies. We need more housing and yet there are too many empty rooms in our present homes. DNA engineering might be able to correct many medical conditions whilst at the same time antibiotic resistant super-bugs threaten our health. Our political system is in disarray and yet there are more activists than ever protesting on our streets. Some of our children will work in the entertainment industry as You-Tubers and some of our children will hopefully solve the enormous problems facing our world. The world is changing at a fast pace. I am convinced that all our problems are solvable. We can rely on inspiration and ingenuity but we also need a strong moral compass. It goes without saying that I believe we also need a strong and reasoned faith more than ever before. In many ways November is a month for looking back to historic challenges and achievements. We also will be looking back to our time honoured traditions. Spare a thought, however, for all parents as they seek to equip their children educationally, socially, morally and spiritually for the future. John Ganjavi
