Christmas Considerations
Bright lights, tinsel and the packed cafes and bars
| From the Rectory - Dear Friends, For a lot of people Christmas is not going to be as they had expected. Our heart goes out to those whose homes have been flooded. They find themselves in unfamiliar temporary accommodation with serious financial uncertainties. For some Christmas will be different because of the changing political landscape as parliamentary jobs change hands. Sadly for some Christmas will be almost cancelled due to unexpected personal losses. Christmas is a time when we like to know that all is well. We bring out the familiar decorations, maybe spend what we have saved, cheer ourselves up with the prospect of extra entertainment and generally do whatever we can to feel merry as we travel through the darkest days of the year. We like to feel that we have survived the passing year, secure where we are now and hopeful for the future. For many of us this is exactly what the festive season will be like, but for some it will be very different and unsettling. In the midst of the bright lights and tinsel, the packed cafes and bars and the relentless advertising jingles two people quietly make their journey towards a stable. School Nativity Plays and Church Services invite us to travel with Joseph and Mary as they make their way to Bethlehem – two people who had had their world turned upside down in a most unexpected way. Both bemused and bewildered they make their journey. It wasn’t all glorious and angelic for them. It shouldn’t surprise us if they were frightened. In a strange way they were both travelling and at a standstill. How could they plan anything? What could they hope for? What on earth was going on? Then Jesus is born. Joseph and Mary’s lives were still full of uncertainty and confusion, but something wonderful had happened to eclipse their fears. Maybe this is how we can all deal with unsettling and uncertain times. In the midst of the chaos we find something good to focus on and hold onto. A light shines in the darkness. Wishing you all an Advent & Christmas full of wonder, John Ganjavi From the Registers... We welcome through Baptism Oliver Matheou Richardson |
