A Very Happy New Year
1170 thirty generations have come and gone

From the Rectory - Dear Friends, A very Happy New Year to you all. As a new year starts I think about all that will be going on in our country and in our world in the coming months. At the same time I am aware that 2020 is the 850th anniversary of St. Nicholas’. Since it opened its doors for worship in 1170 thirty generations have come and gone. No doubt the church marked many a major occasion in the life of our nation. At the same time endless personal moments have been marked and celebrated. Later on this year we will mark these 850 years with some special events of our own – most probably in July. Watch this space! Historic places have an effect on us. They make us think about the passing of time. As we reflect upon all that has come and gone, we realise that these present days will also pass. One day we will all be history! Strangely enough, as well as reminding us of the transitory nature of life, historic places also give us a sense of stability. They stand in their ground, solid and enduring. This strange combination of what is temporary and what is enduring is sometimes referred to as the ‘temporal and eternal’. One of the old prayers of the Church talks about us ‘so passing through things temporal that we lose not the things eternal’. Of course there are some things that by their very nature are temporary and need to be enjoyed while they last. There is a lot to be said for enjoying the here and now. The Christian would want to pass through ‘things temporal’ with a lot of cheerfulness and a lot of fun. But not reckless fun. That’s the difference. I guess it is a case of ‘Let today’s fun lead to tomorrow’s contentment rather than tomorrow’s regrets!’ How great it is to wake up remembering a great party...without nursing a cracking hangover! There is a saying ‘Tomorrow never comes’. Our historic places say otherwise. Tomorrow does come. Tomorrows come at the rate of one a day. Tomorrow we will look back on this day and we will ask ’What on earth did I do with my life’. May God bless us so that 2020 may be a great year as we live it...and also when one day we look back at it.
