Transition Challenges
Brexit is happening and Lent is just around the corner

From the Rectory - Dear Friends, What does it feel like? Being in a transition period? That’s what we are now in. We have now left the EU but the rest of the year is a ‘transition period’ as we sort out a trading arrangement. During this time nothing might seem different and yet everything is different. Harry & Meghan are also in a transition period. During the next year they will be working out their new arrangement, balancing out their public and private lives. Being in a transition period suggests that a major decision has been made but everything might change or even unravel. Ready to get your head around a big word? Here it is: Escatology. It’s a religious word describing the stage of history we are in now. Apparently we are in an end game. According to those who know about these things, 2000 years ago Jesus won the ultimate victory over all that is evil. All that is left is to mop up the last pockets of resistance. It’s the famous “They think it is all over. It is now”. Engagements can be seen as transition periods when couples are as good as married, although they aren’t. Transition periods are understandable but they are not easy times. They can be unsettling, and we can be restless and unsure until they are over. Despite all the promises and reassurances we can’t feel confident and settled about any new relationship until the new arrangement is fully signed, sealed, tested, certified and operational. We await the full benefits. In day gone by when people chose to become Christians they were put into a transition period when they could fully assess the implications of their commitment. The season of Lent (the 40 days leading up to Easter) was seen as the classic transition time when converts prepared for their baptism. This year Lent begins on 26th February. We are invited to look carefully at our faith. Where are we in our relationship with God? Are we still testing it out as in a transition period, or have we made the decision and settled the matter?
