October 2018 From the Rectory - Dear Friends, Every time I look at the news channel I am told there is some ‘breaking news’. My immediate reaction is that something has just happened that I must be alerted to. Then I realise the same story has been ‘breaking’ for the last six hours. The ‘Breaking News’ caption is just a tool being used to grab my attention by making events sound more exciting than they are. And while I am on the subject, what about the regular exciting news alerts about the next meteor shower, super moon, passing comet and planets alignment? We get excited and stay up to watch the spectacular scene only to end up with a cloudy sky! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not turning into a grumpy old man. I am just slightly bothered that things need to be sensationalised to grab our attention and, despite events often not living up to the hype, we fall for the next jolt and breaking news. Excitement is great, and we all enjoy the occasional quickening of the pulse. At the same time there is huge merit in learning to enjoy the ordinary pace of life and the predictable routines of everyday living. How wonderful it is to have settled into a rhythm of life with its ebbs and flows, with plenty of the usual and the occasional extraordinary. Contentment in life is a prized possession. In Philippians 4: 11-13 St. Paul says: I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him (Jesus) who gives me strength. Finally, Sunday 4th November is All Souls weekend and we give thanks to God for loved ones who have journeyed on from this life to the next. The altar will be covered in lights in their memory. If you wish to have a candle lit for a loved one, and their name mentioned in the prayers, please let me know at the Rectory by Sunday 28th October.
