The Rector’s Monthly Message – August 2018
Is it hot enough for you?

From the Rectory - Dear Friends,
Spare a thought for our farming community as the prolonged hot weather affects the crops. For some of us the hot weather is inconvenient, but for some it endangers their livelihood. We would all like to think that our way of life is robust with deep reserves of everything we need. In reality life is more delicately fine-tuned than that. In recent debates about trade we have learnt how industry relies on precision timing for supply chains and deliveries. Delays cost millions. Similarly in farming, get a weather calculation wrong and the harvest can be ruined. But hey, we are all convinced that this heat-wave is a blip and that next year we will be back to soggy summers. What if we are wrong?
Self-sufficiency is promoted as a virtue. In the face of unpredictable climates we are encouraged to rely on ourselves. Furthermore we are commended if we live well within our means. Cushioned against the uncertainties, we can make our way carefully through the weeks and years. All this sounds like good advice, and yet something about this way of life worries me, especially if it is extended into every area of life.
There is another vision of the world in which I rely on you and you rely on me. We are dependent on each other. Not over-dependent or a burden but nevertheless dependent. This way of life requires us to be aware of each other, loyal, reliable, and dependable. Our natural position would be to be involved and supportive. This could be very healthy. After all, we promote ‘closely-knit families and communities’ as to be admired.
In an uncertain world let us remember the story of Cain & Abel in Genesis 4. The punchline is clear – we are our brother’s keeper.
