Summer Time
Schools Out For Summer!

From the Rectory - Dear Friends, The school holidays are upon us. As is customary the weather, on the first day of the holidays, was overcast. But temperatures soon started climbing and the news is of records being broken for the hottest day and night in our country. Recently I have conducted weddings here and elsewhere on days that should have guaranteed good weather. But instead cloudy skies and the occasional drizzle marked the occasions. The weather does not always bow to our wishes, and despite humorous suggestions none of us can control it. It is a strange combination of thoughts that one the one hand nature is governed by absolute laws whilst it can still be unpredictable. There are many people who can be moody and unpredictable although at the same time they come good in the end and always deliver. Maybe that is how we see our new Prime Minister! But how about you and me? What are we like? In my job I am often asked to explain what God is like. The typical Victorian image of God was of a deity unmoved by the turmoils in human life. Pictures were painted of Jesus with an expressionless face, looking up to heaven rather than down to earth. In contrast, the Bible paints a very different picture. In the Old Testament we come across a God who engages with people, arguing with them, caring for them, and occasionally persuaded to change his plans by them. In the New Testament the shortest verse is two words: Jesus wept. Here we have the Son of God deeply moved by events. So, did the Victorians get it all wrong? I guess the point they were making was that God’s true character remains the same at all times and in all circumstances. So, here is our God: passionate and caring, open to being moved by events, and yet always true to his core character – Love. God is surprisingly approachable and utterly dependable whatever the weather.
