April, Easter & Remembrance
Spring is Sprung - well nearly!

Henley in Arden Parish Church – celebrating life in the heart of Henley - April 2019 From the Rectory - Dear Friends, Two thousand years ago people were far less knowledgeable than today. They had no access to industrial power or any of the inventions of the electronic world. We refer to their way of life as primitive. Their need to make sense of the world, however, was as strong as ours but due to their ignorance they came up with fanciful ideas. Superstitions arose along with far-fetched religious opinions. And yet however much their life was different from ours, it was equally real. The realities of life and death were all around them. They knew when someone was alive and they certainly knew when someone was dead. On 19th April we will be remembering someone who died on a cross, and on the 21st April we will be celebrating their resurrection. The witnesses to these events may have had a primitive lifestyle compared with our sophistication, but nevertheless they understood what they had experienced. Someone they had known very well had died, and three days later we was alive. Soon a whole new world order would be established based on their encounter with the risen Jesus. The world’s calendar would soon use Jesus’ birth date as a pivotal point for the whole of history. The witness accounts of those ‘primitive’ men and women would come to be known as ‘gospel truth’. Every Sunday we hear a reading from one of the Gospels. We hear the stories of men and women. For a little while we are transported back in time and we stand alongside them. It is extraordinary how, despite nearly 2000 years separating us, it is so easy to identify with them. They lived, they had responsibilities, they had joys and sorrows, they had hopes and fears, and they had insights and questions. They lived real lives, and when they met Jesus they believed they had met the real thing. I hope you don’t mind that I haven’t made any reference to present day issues. Occasionally there are moments when we have to stop, stand back, and remember the bigger picture. Happy Easter, and may God go with you.
