From the Rectory March 2019
March thoughts of Ash Wednesday and beyond

Henley in Arden Parish Church – celebrating life in the heart of Henley in March 2019 From the Rectory - Dear Friends, Every time there is a weather forecast the presenters cheer at the thought of sunshine and above average temperatures. In the next breath they warn about climate change. Then there is a cheery comment about needing a drink followed by a sad story about alcohol abuse. Just one more example (while I’m in a grumpy old man mood): we see thousands of children going on protest marches about saving the planet, but no-one spells it out that our lifestyles need to change for the sake of our environment. Yes, we need political action, but we also need to make changes in our own lives. What all these stories have in common is that what we have intellectually decided to be important needs to work its way into our conversations, attitudes and lifestyles. “Don’t just believe it. Do something about it.” I think it is a Jewish philosophy that says we cannot claim to believe something if there is no evidence in our life to prove we believe it. There’s nothing new about this view. As Eliza Doolittle sang in My Fair Lady: Words! Words! Words! I'm so sick of words! I get words all day through; First from him, now from you! Is that all you blighters can do? Don't talk of stars burning above; If you're in love, Show me! Tell me no dreams Filled with desire. If you're on fire, Show me! Wednesday 6th March is Ash Wednesday – the start of a serious season in the church leading up to the joy of Easter. During Lent we are invited to do something based on what we believe. Less words, more action. It’s a time to follow Jesus in a more determined way. Our determination to act upon our faith will be shown as we use ash to make the mark of the cross on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday. There will be Services in St. John’s at 10 am and 7.30 pm on that day. Pop in to St. John’s during March and see what’s on the table at the back of church by way of suggestions of what we can do to make Lent special.
