Welcome to a very cold February from the Rectory

Henley in Arden Parish Church – celebrating life in the heart of Henley. From the Rectory - Dear Friends, It was only the third week into January and I noticed snowdrops blooming. We had a spate of mild weather and the birds started chirping as though it were Spring. For goodness sake (if I may address plants and animals for a moment) don’t you realise what time of the year it is! We sophisticated humans have developed diaries and calendars. We know where we are in the year. It is, however, an interesting exercise to see how much of our understanding of time is in harmony with nature. A year follows the solar cycle, and the months roughly follow the lunar cycle. Each day is one revolution of the planet. But there is no natural law to say that there must be 24 hours to a day and 60 minutes to the hour. The world could (if it really had nothing better to do) divide the day into 20 hours and each hour into 100 minutes. Let decimals rule the planet! But what about the seven day week? Have you ever wished for an extra day or two in the week? A ten day week would give us three extra days! At first sight a seven day week seems like an arbitrary division of time – like 60 minutes and 24 hours. But take a second look at the facts. There are many natural seven day cycles governing the way our bodies function. Whichever way you interpret the Creation Story, it seems that the establishing of a seven day rhythm to life was not a random decision made by the storytellers. And again, whatever you make of the ‘10’ Commandments, the fourth Commandment addresses the seven day cycle and hallows one day in seven as a day of rest. Jesus picked up this point and explained that having one day off in seven is not about being forced to conform to a command, but it is actually good for us. It isn’t that long ago that Sundays had a different feel to them. The young found them boring and the rest of us found them restful. Times change, but have they changed too much? Have we got a healthy rhythm to our lives? Within our weekly cycle have we allocated enough time for our physical, mental, social and spiritual well being?
